Just over a year ago, the Anglican Church in Leuven, which is comprised of many students and several families, agreed to work together with Sant’Egidio and Humanitarian Corridors to welcome refugees for the next year. There was a lot of work to prepare. Then, the first family arrived. Thankfully, they were able to be registered legally in Belgium and moved in Antwerpen in November 2023. A second family arrived just days later. Again, they have gone through a succesful procedure to have their status recognised by the Belgian government and just this past week, they moved to an apartment in Brussels. With their move, the 1 year agreement to help with resettlement has ended. The Central Committee would like to thank the incredible team of volunteers from St. Martha & St. Mary’s, Leuven for all their hard work.
We will remember them
On 2 May 2024, the Secretary-General was honoured to lead a re-burial service for Flight Sergeant Charles Carr Atkin at the Noorderbegraafplaats Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Vlissingen. While FS Atkin already had a tombstone, additional remains were found in 2013. A long historical process ended recently and his remains have now been re-buried and re-united. Members of FS Atkin’s family from Australia were also present. Other artefacts that were found from when his plane crashed on the Dutch coast were displayed and shared. The service was organised by the Australian Embassy in Belgium and the Australian defense attache to Belgium, the Netherlands, NATO & SHAPE.
Thanksgiving Mass for the 56th anniversary of Sant'Egidio
On 28 April, the Chaplain-President was honoured to represent the Anglicans of Belgium at a mass celebrated by Archbishop Luc Terlinden of Malines-Bruxelles and Bishop Jean-Pierre Delville of Liège to celebrate the 56th anniversary of our friends at Sant'Egidio, with whom we work so effectively in the Humanitarian Corridors programme. After the service, the first bricks of a new Sant'Egidio social centre based at the parish were ceremonially laid by Archbishop Terlinden, Philippe Close (Mayor of Brussels) and Baroness Hilde Kieboom and Baron Jan De Volder of Sant'Egidio. VILD vergadering
Op 19 april hebben de kapelaan-voorzitter, secretaris-generaal en tweede-secretaris de laatste vergadering van het Vlaams Interlevensbeschouwelijk Dialoog (VILD) bijgewoond. Deze keer was de voorzitterschap onder meneer Bruno Spriet, secretaris-generaal van de rooms-katholieke eredienst in Vlaanderen.
Er werd gesproken over, onder andere: 1) stand van zaken van de erkenningsaanvragen, 2) grote discussie over de net gepubliceerde evaluatiestudie van Universiteit Antwerpen over het eredienstendecreet, 3) verslagen van de werkgroepen i) armoede, ii) communicatie, iii) spirituele zorgverleners; 4) stand van zaken van de commissies misbruik.
Het was een vol agenda met gedachten wisselingen.
Bezoek VRT bij het Centraal Comité
Op 17 april 2024, heeft het Centraal Comité vertegenwoordigers van de VRT op bezoek verwelkomd. Over een kopje koffie hebben ze kennisgemaakt en wat toelichting gegeven over de anglicaanse eredienst in België. De kapelaan-voorzitter heeft de gasten en boek over de anglicaanse kerk gegeven en een rondleiding van Holy Trinity te Brussel en Community Kitchen vzw gemaakt.
FIDIF vergadering
Op 8 april 2024 hebben de kapelaan-voorzitter, secretaris-generaal en tweede secretaris de laatste vergadering van FIDIF bijgewoond. FIDIF zit onder de voorzitterschap van Bernard DuFour namens de rooms-katholieke eredienst en mevrouw Breekveldt van de anglicaanse eredienst dient als secretaris van dit orgaan. Op de agenda stond 4 belangrijke punten: 1) verloop van de erkenning van het boeddhisme, 2) opvolging van het Vlaamse kaderwet voor de erediensten en vrijzinnigheid, 3) communicatie in aanloop van de verkiezingen in 2024 omtrent de financiering van de levensbeschouwingen, 4) gedachte wisseling over mogelijk vredesboom initiatief.
Meeting with Denis Mukwege
On 30 March, the Chaplain-President interviewed Dr Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Congolese gynecologist and campaigner against the rape of women and girls as a weapon of war in the eastern Congo. The interview was part of Jack’s academic research into Christianity in Africa with a particular focus on the Congo, which has a long, and often difficult history with Belgium. Jack, Dr. Mukwege and PhD candidate, Nathan Ngoy, had a most interesting and important conversation about the nature of religious belief in Congo, the links between traditional Congolese beliefs and Christianity, the violence of both European colonisers and African leaders in Congo, and ways in which the victims of rape can begin a process of healing with the support of medical professionals and the churches. Jack felt during this interview that he was in the presence of true human greatness.
Celebrating friendship between faiths
On Wednesday 3 April 2024, the Secretary-General was pleased to represent the Central Committee of the Anglican Church at the Great Synagogue in Brussels for a special evening celebrating the friendship between the Jewish community in Belgium and Cardinal Josef De Kezel & Archbishop Luc Terlinden.
The two Roman Catholic leaders were warmly greeted by the President of the Jewish Consistory, Philippe Markiewicz, Grand Rabbi Guigui, the members of the synagogue and invited dignitaries and guests. The speeches were particularly poignant in light of the current conflict between the state of Israel and Hamas in Gaza, as well as acknowledging the history of anti-semitism in the Roman Catholic and other Christian churches. However, on this evening, the focus was on: friendship, brotherhood, solidarity, democracy and peace among all faiths and convictions in order to strengthen our society and work together for a positive future where everyone can flourish.
Speeches were interspersed with musical pieces which, appropriately enough, can only be described as divine!

CAGO inspector makes vows
On Wednesday 6 March 2024, the Vice-President of the Central Committee, the Secretary-General and the Second Secretary were pleased to attend a special service at Holy Trinity, Brussels where the Inspector-Advisor for Anglican Religious Education in Flanders, Birte Day, professed vows to a consecrated, celebate life as a member of the religious community of Wauvremont. As part of her vows to Bishop Robert Innes, Birte has taken the name ‘Sister Julian’ (of Norwich). The service was very well attended by people of many faiths, colleagues from education, and ecumenical partners. It featured prayers and music in several languages. The Central Committee wishes Sister Julian every blessing.
Focusgroepsgesprek Eredienstdecreet evaluatie
Op 1 maart 2024 hebben de secretaris-generaal en de tweede secretaris van het Centraal Comité deelgenomen van een focusgroepsgesprek samen met andere vertegenwoordigers van de erkende erediensten in Vlaanderen bij de Universiteit Antwerpen. De Vlaamse overheid heeft twee onderzoekers aangesteld om de Eredienstdecreet van 2004 te evalueren met oog op mogelijke aanpassingen voor in het heden. De onderzoekers brachten hun eerste bevindingen uit aan een kleine groep van de erediensten maar dit was nog niet een eind rapport wat in april 2024 zal verschijnen. Het was heel leerzaam voor iedereen.
Bishop Mark visits KU Leuven
On 16 February, the Chaplain-President was delighted to welcome Bishop Mark Edington of the Convocation of Episcopal churches in Europe to Leuven, to visit the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies there. KU Leuven has the largest faculty of theology in Europe, currently ranked 5th in the world. Two Anglican priests lecture in the faculty, the Chaplain-President himself Jack McDonald and the Revd Prof Hector Patmore. Bishop Mark, Hector and Jack had a useful meeting about possible relations between KU Leuven and seminaries of the Episcopal Church in the USA.
Vlaams Interlevensbeschouwelijke Dialoog
Op 2 februari 2024 hebben de secretaris-generaal en tweede secretaris van het Centraal Comité van de Anglicaanse Eredienst in België de laatste vergadering van het Vlaams Interlevensbeschouwelijke Dialoog (VILD) bijgewoond.
Het dialoog heeft onder andere gesproken over: erkenning van spirituele zorgverleners, stand van zaken van erkenningsdossiers, de situatie in het Midden-Oosten, de parlementaire commissies over seksueel misbruik, en over de verkiezingen.
1 jaar digitalisering erediensten
De zon straalde binnen het mooi grenoveerde bibliotheek van Mechelen op 1 februari 2024 voor een bijeenkomst met de Agentschap Binnenlands Bestuur en de erkende erediensten in Vlaanderen. Het was precies 1 jaar geleden dat alle communicatie tussen de lokale gemeenschappen en de overheden digitaal moeten plaatsvinden. De secretaris-generaal heeft de anglicaanse eredienst vertegenwoordigd. Opmerkelijk is dat 99,9% van de geloofsgemeenschappen in Vlaanderen hebben de verandering gemaakt. Dat grote succes is gewaardeerd en het is gehoopt dat deze samenwerking voorbeeld voor de toekomst kan zijn. De deelnemers hebben daarna genoten van een lekkere lunch.
Annual Sant'Egidio Interfaith Harmony Breakfast
On 1 February, the Chaplain-President was honoured to represent the Anglicans of Belgium and Bishop Robert at the annual breakfast for interfaith leaders organised in the Hôtel Plaza in Brussels by our great friends Sant'Egidio Belgium. The breakfast takes place in the context of World Interfaith Harmony Week. The morning was opened by Baron Jan De Volder, a colleague of Jack's in KU Leuven and the guiding force behind the Humanitarian Corridors initiative in which the Central Committee is deeply invested, this year with the precious help of St Martha and St Mary's Anglican Church Leuven. The principal speaker was Mevr Nicole de Moor, Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration in Prime Minister De Croo's government. A most interesting discussion followed on the detail of the EU's new Migration and Asylum Pact and its implications for the safety of asylum-seekers and other migrants coming into Europe.

National Ecumenical Service in Brussels
On 25 January, the final day of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Chaplain-President was honoured to represent the Anglicans of Belgium at the national veillée oecuménique, held this year at the Catholic cathedral in Brussels and presided by Archbishop Luc Terlinden. Jack was blessed by the further Anglican representation and support of Reverends Sunny Hallanan (All Saints' Waterloo) and Jean-Bosco Turahirwa (Holy Trinity Brussels), who both said prayers in the service, embodying more fully the diversity (and unity) of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
Anglicaans themajaar planning met PARCUM
Op 22 januari 2024 hebben de kapelaan voorzitter, secretaris-generaal en tweede secretaris vergaderd met mvrw Julie Aerts van PARCUM rond het themajaar van de Anglicaanse eredienst in België. PARCUM is meer dan een museum van religieuze onderwerpen. PARCUM is een expertise centrum voor advies over alles wat erfgoed - roerend, onroerend, immaterieel - betreft.
Wij zijn begonnen met plannen om het erfgoed van de anglicanen in Vlaanderen beter in kaart te brengen en opleidingen voor de parochies. Stay tuned!
Gebedsweek voor christelijke eenheid 2024
Op 21 januari 2024 had de secretaris-generaal de eer en plezier om de anglicaanse kerk te Ieper te vertegenwoordigen bij de oecumenische viering tijdens de jaarlijkse gebedsweek voor christelijke eenheid.
Dit jaar wordt de liturgie voorbereid door de christenen in Burkina Faso. Het thema voor de week is, ‘Heb God lief en je naaste als jezelf’. (Luc; 10.25-37)
De protestantse kerk De Rots was gastkerk en gaf warme welkom aan allen. De gastvrijheid na de dienst was ook heel fijn. Deken E.H. Miguel Dehondt heeft een boeiende en uitdagende preek gebracht aan de aanwezigen. De oecumene in Ieper is sterk en levend.
Round Table on the Challenges of Ecumenism
On 18 January, the Chaplain-President, supported by the Revd Sarah-Jane King, was the Anglican speaker at an evening round table on ecumenism organised by our good friends at the Chapelle de l'Europe, the Jesuit and ecumenical chaplaincy to the European Quarter in Brussels, in the context of the current Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Father Manuel Prieto (Catholic, the General Secretary of COMECE), Ms Katerina Pekridou (Orthodox, on the staff of CEC) and Pastor Johannes Landau (Lutheran) joined Jack in discussing the challenges and opportunities of 21st century ecumenism. Questions from the audience raised the issue of migration from the Global South as a key factor in transforming all the mainstream European Churches in exciting and life-giving ways.
The Anglican Church in dialogue with the EU
On a cold and snowy 18 January, the Chaplain-President, in his capacity as Bishop Robert's adviser for EU affairs, attended the formal High-Level Meeting between the European Commission and Religious Leaders at the Commission buildings, generally called the Article 17 Dialogue. Representatives of the European Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant Churches, together with representatives of European Judaism, Islam and Buddhism, met to discuss the theme "The European way of life in times of instability". There were in fact three Anglican clergy in the room: Jack as EU adviser, the Revd Sarah-Jane King (curate at St Martha and St Mary Leuven and also a civil servant in the European Commission) and Dr Dagmar Winter (Bishop of Huntingdon, acting Bishop of Ely and a Vice-President of the Conference of European Churches ).
Didachè onderwijs 2024
Op 16 januari 2024 heeft de secretaris-generaal ‘Didachè onderwijs 2024’ bijgewoond bij KU Leuven. Het thema was ‘Kiezen voor de toekomst van het godsdienstonderwijs’.
De lezingen hebben plaatsgevonden in de indrukwekkende Promotiezaal. Het begon met prof. Herni Derriotte over de evolutie in het Franstalige gebied. Dan prof. Jan Woppowa van Universiteit van Paderborn sprak over de ervaringen in Duitstalige landen. De voormiddag programma werd afgesloten door Jeroen Hendrickx over de ontwikkelingen in Vlaanderen.
In de namiddag gaf Minister Annelies Verlinden een interview door een video. Spijtig genoeg kon Kardinaal Jozef De Kesel niet aanwezig zijn wegens onvoorziene omstandigheden. Meneer Jürgen Mettepenningen heeft de lezing van Kardinaal De Kesel aan het publiek voorgelezen.
Wannes Cappelle heeft door de middag een aantal liederen gezongen. En de namiddag heeft ook 2 panelgespreken gehad.
